What is Vitamin B12?

Vitamin B12 deficiency can manifest through a range of symptoms, such as:

  • Shortness of breath (Dyspnoea)
  • Rapid breathing (Tachypnoea)

Main Causes of a Vitamin B12 Deficiency

The primary causes of a Vitamin B12 deficiency include:

  • Insufficient dietary intake (common in vegan and vegetarian diets)
  • Certain medical conditions, e.g. Crohn’s disease, use of Proton Pump Inhibitors or a functional Vitamin B12 deficiency
  • Pernicious anaemia

Who Needs This Service?

Our Vitamin B12 Injection Service is suitable for:

  • Individuals aged 18 and above
  • Patients with a confirmed diagnosis of Vitamin B12 deficiency
  • Those previously prescribed Vitamin B12 injections
  • Individuals displaying symptoms of a B12 deficiency or having risk factors (such as those with pernicious anaemia or following a vegetarian/vegan diet)

Note: For patients without prior diagnosis, we may offer the service based on symptoms, risk factors or confirmation of a B12 deficiency through a reliable test kit.

How Does the Service Work?

  1. Consultation: Schedule an appointment with Cyncoed Pharmacy’s pharmacist, Hayley Jones, for an initial consultation.
  2. Assessment: Hayley will assess your need for the injection based on your symptoms, medical history and risk factors.
  3. Administration: If eligible, the Vitamin B12 injection will be administered at your appointment.

It’s as simple as that!

Price

The cost of our Vitamin B12 Injection Service is £39. This includes the initial consultation and the injection.

Please note: If ineligible for the Vitamin B12 injection, there will be a consultation fee of £15.

Frequency of Injections

The exact schedule will be determined by our pharmacist in conjunction with your GP, based on your specific treatment plan.

How Long Until You Feel the Effects?

Improvements in symptoms can be expected within 2 weeks but may take up to three months, especially for diet-related deficiencies.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Vitamin B12 injections include:

  • Discomfort at the injection site
  • Mild diarrhoea
  • Itching

A Patient Information Leaflet will be provided at your appointment and our pharmacist will discuss with you potential side effects and their management.

Note: Any adverse reactions should be reported via the Yellow Card scheme.

Additional Information

Preferred Injection Site: Deltoid muscle of the upper arm

Dietary Requirements: The Cobalin-H injection is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Exclusions: We are unable to administer the Vitamin B12 injection to patients under the following conditions:

  • If you have a known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of the injection or have had a previous adverse reaction after having the Vitamin B12 injection
  • If you are known or suspected to be pregnant
  • If the diagnosis for Vitamin B12 deficiency is unclear or uncertain
  • If you have a cobalt allergy, cardiac arrhythmias or any other medical condition that would contraindicate the use of Vitamin B12 injections
